Netflix has announced the cancellation of 'The Boroughs,' a science fiction series produced by the Duffer Brothers, shortly after its initial release. This decision comes despite the show's creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, having envisioned a comprehensive multi-season arc for the narrative.
The series, which debuted to audiences less than a month ago, centered on a group of elderly residents within a retirement community who discover a supernatural enigma beneath their peaceful lives. The cast featured notable actors such as Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, and Geena Davis, bringing their considerable talents to the intriguing premise.
Addiss had previously shared their ambitious plans for 'The Boroughs,' including a "three-season plan with ideas about spinoffs after that." He emphasized that they had deliberately avoided a cliffhanger ending for the first season, aiming instead for an emotional resolution that would still hint at future possibilities. This cautious approach was informed by their past experience with 'Dark Crystal,' another Netflix production that was canceled after its Emmy-winning first season, leaving fans with unresolved plotlines. Unfortunately, these carefully laid plans for 'The Boroughs' will not come to fruition, as the streaming giant has opted not to renew the show.
This cancellation is part of a broader trend affecting Duffer Brothers' projects on Netflix. While 'Stranger Things' concluded, and 'Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen' was a limited series, 'The Boroughs' joins the list of canceled shows. This leaves 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85' as the sole remaining Duffer Brothers' series on the platform, with a second season anticipated later this year. The succession of cancellations has led to speculation about the Duffer Brothers' future collaborations with Netflix, particularly as they transition to Paramount for upcoming film projects. The swift end of 'The Boroughs' underscores the competitive and often unpredictable nature of streaming platform content, where even well-regarded creators and established production teams can face early conclusions for their endeavors.
